PROJECTION OF MEMORIES

Historical buildings speak to us of another time, of particular events, of old crafts, and even of particular historical characters. Perhaps they’re the product of nostalgia for an idealized past.

There’s also a romantic dimension to old buildings. Some traditional architectural styles evoke literary and emotional association.

When you ask regular people which buildings they like around the world, a lot of them answer, they prefer historical ones, for example, Angkor Wat, St. Peter Cathedral, Machu Picchu, and even primitive huts and caves. Recently, people stand upon history, but what is the reason for it? This question needs to be answered to come up with a house which is following the idea of “Living upon History”. Quite often, people make mistake by copying a traditional architectural style, because that is what they like. But these fake buildings don’t have the same spirit as the real historical buildings, how is that possible?

This proposal is telling the answer. People like the Parthenon in Greece, Machu Picchu, and the caves of the first human beings, but there is no style- and shape relation. All three are totally different, but still people like them. It is about the historical spirit. People get these historical spirits from 2 directions. The first direction came from respecting the ancestors. Every person is curious about themselves, who they are, and where they are from. A historical building gives a sense of recognition of our ancestors and ourselves, therefore a sense of comfort. The second one is realizing life. Because of history, people have proof. What everybody sees around us in the current period is reality and we like to compare this current period with the previous periods.

This house “Projection of Memories” reflects the appreciation of the current time period and history, by projection. Since I believe, copying is not the right way to do it at this period of time. It is about purity, respecting ancestors, and recognizing personal life. This house is situated in the Fabric district Satwa in Dubai. It is called the Fabric district, since so many tailors, owned by Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis, are there. Dubai, a city with a short history is an interesting place with its own culture, history, and identity step by step is coming. Satwa, the fabric district is in the situation of creating identity. I use fabrics of Satwa in the house, used as a projection screen to project photos of the past.
